Most backyard fire pits crack their base in the first wet winter because they're sitting on dirt. Ours don't. Here's what's under the stone.
Built-in fire pits — seating walls, integrated hearth, set into a paved area or terraced part of the garden. This is what turns a fire pit into a place you actually use 9 months a year, not a 6-week novelty.
Standalone feature pits — round or square, sandstone or block, plain or decorative course. Cheaper, faster, still hand-built. Best when you've got an existing paved area and just want the centrepiece.
Combo with retaining work — most of our fire pits go in alongside a wall or terracing job. The pit tucks into a step in the landscape, the back wall doubles as wind protection, and the cost-per-element drops because we're already on site.

While we're building your fire pit, we can handle the surrounding wall, the path and the level changes — all in-house.
Standalone sandstone or block fire pit (~1.2m diameter, hand-built, drained base): typically $2,200–$4,800 finished. Built-in pit with seating walls and a paved surround: $6,500–$14,000+ depending on size and stone. We give you a fixed price after the site walk, not a per-block rate that grows.
For most suburban backyard fire pits in NSW — no, provided you meet the setback rules (typically 3m from boundaries and structures, no closer than your local council says). Bushfire-zone properties have stricter rules. We'll tell you on the site walk where you stand.
Sandstone (Parklea or similar) — most popular, beautiful, weathers nicely. Besser block with stone facing — cheaper, still looks good. Recycled brick — character, period homes. We avoid materials that crack with heat — no random pavers, no untested stones.
Standalone fire pit: 2–3 days. Built-in pit with seating walls: 5–10 days. Fire pit + retaining + paving combo: 2–3 weeks. We give you the calendar at quote time.
Optional. For longevity, especially on block-built pits, we usually fit a 5mm steel ring or fire-rated refractory brick liner. Pure sandstone pits we can build without, but they'll need course-checking after a few seasons. We'll talk you through the trade-off.
$20m public liability with NTI, plus workers comp through Allianz. Certificates available on request.
